What I’m Really Thinking About During Our Informational Interview

It’s that time of year. The birds are singing, the flowers are in bloom, and thousands of MBA candidates are sending out informational interview requests. It wasn’t so long ago that I was in their shoes, desperate for help in my awkward, stumbling journey on the Dream Job Trail. My wagon had a broken axle, one of my oxen had died, and I was living under the constant threat of starvation. All I needed was enough money to pay a guide so I didn’t have to ford the river and risk losing all my supplies, when a member of my party died of dysentery and we had to stop to bury him. The Delicious, Delicious End of an Era

It’s done. I’m officially an MBA.

I know I’m an MBA because I’ve suddenly become a celebrity. The Alumni Association is knocking down my door. Recruiters can’t get enough of me on LinkedIn. Even the dean of the business school wants to meet me and shake my hand. Granted, it was Commencement and he shook everyone’s hand, but I’m convinced that I got the firmest grip. Continue reading

B-School Update & Networking 101

If I appear to have fallen off the face of the earth over the past few weeks, I have. Or rather, I started business school and suddenly have a lot less time than I used to. Fancy that.

Luckily I got a great email from BSchool Admit that knocked me back into the real world for a minute. She asked for some networking advice to help during the application process, and was nice enough to share my response on her blog. The Truth About Admit Day – Part 2

Admit Day wasn’t quite as extreme as I had anticipated, which is a shame as I was really looking forward to that Poetry Slam. But it was surprisingly helpful. There were moments of “being on our best behavior in front of the Dean,” as well as more unguarded conversations with the Student Ambassadors over pints of beer. We all looked like zombies by the end of the day, but I guess I should consider it training for business school – like training for a marathon, but with more alcohol and less comfortable shoes.
